scientific argument. In other words, in applying Toulmin logic to a specific problem, one makes a logical, objective examination of claims. Therefore, applying this principle to the issue of whether or not sex education should be part of the middle school curriculum necessitates that the following be examined. Specifically, there are five phases that are employed in the Toulmin logic approach (Toulmin Logic, 2003, See also National-Louis University, 2003). They are: claim, grounds, warrant, backing, and rebuttal. The claim is the major proposition of the argument (Toulmin Logic, 2003). In this case, the claim would be that sex education should be part of the middle school curriculum (Toulmin Logic, 2003). It is always important to state claims as succinctly as possible, as done here, in order to assist the claim in being able to stand up to the forthcoming scrutiny (Toulmin Logic, 2003). Grounds is the next phase, and this means the body of evidence upon which the claim rests (Toulmin Logic, 2003). This includes things like facts, results of experiments, and other forms of data (Toulmin Logic, 2003). Therefore, in the case we are referencing, grounds would include the following. * The average girl today begins to develop some characteristics of puberty between ages 10 and 11, with many showing some changes at ages eight or nine (Bailey and Furlan, 2001). * One in 12 students (8.3 percent) experience their first sexual intercourse before age 13, and a quarter of all children (24 percent of girls and 27 percent of boys) have had sex by age 15 (Bailey and Furlan, 2001). * Each year, one in four sexually ...
