of other characters, activities that lead to his position as a tragic hero. In the end he is all but forced to engage in activities that he would likely rather
not do, but must because of the nature of his culture and his own manhood. The following paper examines Titus Andronicus as a Tragic Hero. Titus Andronicus as Tragic
Hero In first understanding the tragic nature of the story and of Titus, one author notes that, "Tragedy is a drama dealing with
a noble protagonist placed in a highly stressful situation that leads to a disastrous, usually fatal conclusion" (Hudson Shakespeare Company). This is clearly seen in the story of Titus and
it is well laid out in the beginning when the character of Marcus states, upon the return of Titus, "And now at last, laden with horrors spoils, Returns the good
Andronicus to Rome, Renowned Titus, flourishing in arms. Let us entreat, by honour of his name, Whom worthily you would have now succeed" (Shakespeare I i).
In this introduction to the character of Titus it is obvious that he is well regarded and that he has a reputation of being a noble
