Kuhns groundbreaking book The Structure of Scientific Revolutions (1962, University of Chicago Press) radically altered the way that change in science is perceived. The traditional understanding states that science progresses by small increments of change, which occur due to experimentation, becoming progressively more accurate (Buchwald, 1996). While Kuhn agrees that the body of scientific knowledge has become increasingly more accurate and coherent over the past several centuries, he insists that scientific theories, and the "instruments and experiments associated with them" do not change bit by bit. Rather, Kuhn maintains that these theories should be understood as integrated wholes that are not easily replaced (Buchwald, 1996). In other words, Kuhn postulated that science advances via revolutions rather then incremental change. In his Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Kuhn defines the term "paradigms" as "universally recognized scientific achievements that for a time provide model problems and solutions to a community of practitioners" (Davidson, 1997, p. 13). The existing paradigms of the science community, according to Kuhn, are established via textbooks that are currently in use, the curricula of colleges and universities, and in the pages of scientific journals relating to specific fields of inquiry (Davidson, 1997). In other words, Kuhn uses the word "paradigm" in order to explain the core concepts relating to the structure of scientific revolutions, while also using this premise to sum up the circular development of scientific history (Jiang, 1998).
