He was able to improve his health, became an avid sports fan and participated in numerous outdoor activities (Turn of the Century, nd). A year after his graduation from Harvard in 1880, Roosevelt married Alice Hathaway Lee (Theodore Roosevelt, nd; Burns and Ives, 1996). The next year, 1882, Roosevelt was elected to the Assembly of New York State (Theodore Roosevelt, nd). He was only 23 years old at the time of his election (Turn of the Century, nd). It did not take long for Roosevelt to distinguish himself and become a leader among the minority of Republicans in the Assembly. He began pushing for social reforms through regulations (Theodore Roosevelt, nd). Roosevelt also attended Columbia Law School following his Harvard graduation (Turn of the Century, nd). Tragedy struck Roosevelt in 1884 when his wife died giving birth to his daughter, Alice (Turn of the Century, nd). On the same day his wife died, his mother also died (Turn of the Century, nd).
