Yet, while everything seems okay, few coaches are like Eric Taylor and few players only try the substance for a short time. Yet, like the television show, steroid use often goes undetected. And while there are high school athletes who are obviously using steroids-their muscles are larger, their personalities change, they are stronger than ever-there is little protocol in place to suggest that random drug testing will be a part of their lives. Today, just a handful of states in America have decided it is prudent to randomly test high school athletes. It seems as if the "word on the street" is that steroids are utilized by high school students at an alarming rate, but many studies say this is really not the case. There are a number of small studies that suggest only a very small percentage of students-perhaps as little as 1%--abuse anabolic steroids. Whatever the truth, random testing programs are just beginning to emerge and can provide some data in terms of the necessity of these models. Are mandatory testing programs effective? Before embarking on a review of the literature in terms of the effectiveness of these programs, and whether or not steroids are very harmful, it pays to look at the history of steroid use in high school. Rumor has it that steroid use begin in 1959 when a Texas doctor provided a football team with Dianabol, and treated them for an entire season (Yesalis, 2000).
