Although in close proximity to Southern Asia countries, the Philippines remains shrouded in mystery and misconception to many in the United States. This may have a great deal to do with the Cold War. Americans know little about the archipelago of the Philippines. The Filipinos are a proud and colorful people with a passionate heritage. If the Republic of the Philippines is to meet the challenges of a vastly changed world as the evolution of the post-Cold War continues, the Republic of the Philippines must modify its economic and political system. To do that, the United States should expand its relationship with the Republic of the Philippines. The United States has taken military bases out of the Philippines. In fact, this event "marks the end of a key link between the two nations. Filipinos must now come to terms with their national identity and a new relationship with the US" (Liu & McKillop 57). Although the United States has left the military bases, this does not mean that the relationship between the two nations can not and should not expand. The Republic of the Philippines should have its own identity. It should also depend on the United States for social, economic, and political guidance because the United States is larger, more solvent, and has an excellent democratic system.
