first flight in 1955, the single-seat military U-2 aircraft (an aircraft commonly known as the "Dragon Lady") has undergone many subsequent revisions. Global Aircraft (2004) reports that by 1967 the size of the U-2 had increased by forty percent, by 1981 the TR-1A (a tactical reconnaissance version) was delivered to the U.S. Airforce and by 1992 all TR-1s and U-2s were designated U-2Rs. Subsequently, complete engine replacements occurred in all U-2Rs and they were designated U-2S/TU-2S (Global Aircraft). These were not by far the last revisions the U-2 would undergo, however. Global Aircraft (2004) reports current ongoing modifications including complete rewiring in an: "effort to lower its overall electronic noise signature and allow a quieter platform for the newest generation of sensors. The sensors are also in a state of constant upgrades. The cockpit is being redesigned to replace the 1960s vintage round dial gauges with multifunction displays and complete glass cockpit technology". Modifications such as those outlined above have kept the U-2 one of the most formidable planes in our military fleet. It has, in fact, performed many critical missions over the years. These include such historical events as the 1962 photographic reconnaissance of the Soviets installing missiles in Cuba as well as more recent accomplishments in Desert Storm and Allied Force (Global Aircraft). Based at Beale Air Force Base, California, at the 9th Reconnaissance Wing; U-2s are currently stationed around the world (Global Aircraft).
