The trebuchet is a catapult device that was commonly employed in medieval times as a tool of war to launch projectiles. It had to render tremendous force since a typical objective was to send the projectile into a castle wall and to ultimately penetrate that wall (Corff, Grunstein, and Passalaqua, 2006). Other useful projectiles in medieval times, of course, were diseased bodies and even dead horses (Corff, Grunstein, and Passalaqua, 2006)! Obvioulsly, the trebuchet was a powerful weapon. Corff, Grunstein, and Passalaqua (2006) report that: "a large trebuchet was capable of throwing a 300 pound projectile over 300 yards" The trebuchet is essentially a counterweighted lever that is attached to a fulcrum at variable places along its length and equipped with a sling at the end in which a projectile can be placed. Its efficiency, i.e. how heavy of a projectile that it can hurl and the distance that it can hurl it, is determined by the length of the beam, its attachment point along the beam and the distance of that attachment point from the ground, the weight and position of the counterweight, and the length of the sling (Corff, Grunstein, and Passalaqua, 2006). Trebuchet function is determined by the same laws of physics that determine all aspects of our world, whether that world is our contemporary world or the medieval world. Isaac Newton, of course, is credited with explaining the mechanism of universal motion. Although constructed in the 1600s, his theories on gravity would ...
