Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 5 page analysis of the article by Russell Baker which originally appeared in the June 15, 1996 edition of the “New York Times”. Notes that although Baker uses a tongue-in-cheek approach to his argument against legalized gambling, his contention is not only fact based but supported by a number of other authors. This paper uses statistical fact and history to prove that the original contentions that state sponsored lotteries were the salve to soothe all financial woes are dead wrong. This approach supports Baker’s contention that it has now become explicitly clear that state sponsored lotteries are not all positive in terms of societal impacts. Concludes that probably even Baker does not believe some of his contentions that gambling provides some societal benefit when left in the realm of the criminal. Such points, however, provide a degree of entertainment value to his article, a value which is missing in many more fact-filled presentations of this argument. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
