girls journey from solitude and resistance to belonging and acceptance. In some ways Ferns story is the story of any teenage girl. She has a rebellious spirit and,
in the last months of her mothers life, had even turned away from her. Although Fern and her mother had been close all of her life, Ferns life was
disrupted when her new boyfriend decided to call it quits. Fern reacted by withdrawing deep within herself and becoming blunt, even mean, in her interactions with her mother.
It also deviates from the typical mainstream story of mother/daughter stress because Ferns mother is of Canadas First Nations. Interestingly, however, Ravel presents this point only subtly. It
is up to the reader to ferret out the two or three references to Fern and her mothers native heritage and to weigh the impact of that fact against what
it means in the story. To further complicate the story line, Ferns story deviates from that of a typical teenager when she comes home from school one day to find
out that her mother has died. Given Ferns urban existence well outside the boundaries of First Nations reserves, her mothers death could serve to sever Fern from her First
Nations heritage. Fortunately, that turns out to not be the case. Fern actually grows spiritually closer to that heritage as she works to figure out her place within
her family and within the world as a whole. After her mothers death, Fern is left all alone in the world
