Some of these creatures are ordinary looking people who lead rather normal lives. A jury convicted David Westerfield of the murder of his neighbor Danielle and while the evidence was circumstantial, it was unmistakable. Indeed, a sadistic pedophile can be living next door and seem rather ordinary. Others are more extraordinary and notorious. Westley Allan Dodd is in fact one such convicted child murderer and rapist (Dority, 1993). He was hanged for his brutal crime (1993). Many claimed that Dodd was a "sadistic psychopathic pedophile" and that he was incapable of empathy (1993). In examining people like Westerfield and Dodd, what are their motives anyway, and what do they do to the children they harm? First, it should be noted that pedophilia is considered to be a sexual orientation (Musk, Swetz & Vernon, 1997). It is something that is related to a sexual attraction to youngsters and a fantasy life based upon them (1997). Hence, someone who preys on children and plays sexual games with them will be aroused. However, these games are often kept secret. Many children grow up harboring these secrets. It is also something that destroys the sexuality of children growing up and tends to be a learned behavior as well. It has been reported that many predators were molested themselves as children. Many victims of pedophiles do experience trauma as well as to have lasting psychological consequences (Musk, Swetz & Vernon, 1997). As far as therapy for the perpetrators are concerned, no amount of therapy will alter the sexual desire for a child (1997).
