quote refers is none other than BMX racing. BMX translates to "bicycle moto-cross" (Reisgies 50). In this sport, competitors race bicycles on dirt tracks which are replete with jumps
and turns (50). Racers have to be fast in order to remain competitive, and they must be well experienced in the art of bicycling (50). Those are just a couple
of prerequisites which will make participation both safe and successful. There are numerous examples of kids on BMX bikes engaging in racing of various proportions, each having begun at younger
and younger ages. Steve Veltman, a successful adult racer, is just one of these examples. He obtained a great number of points during the 1993 Grand National series where he
took first place (Mitchell PG). Veltman first went into racing professionally in 1990 and claims that he wants to leave his mark on BMX racing specifically (PG). To get to
that point, Veltman invested a lot of time. For example, this athlete cross-trains daily with weights and is on a strict diet (PG). BMX racing is bicycling but it is
sport all the same and is quite competitive. Athletes need to train just as if they are engaging in any competitive sport. And even ordinary bicyclists know that they must
keep in shape for any type of event in order to perform well. Veltman began his career at the age of ten when he began racing with friends in Texas
(PG). By the age of 13, Veltman was considered the top amateur racer in the nation (PG). It is found that teens and pre-teens are often leaders in this sport.
