Machiavelli claimed was the prefect leader. While his supporters contend he was a great president, critics point to the fact that Clinton disgraced the office, was weak on foreign policy,
and took credit from the economic boom that was really not his doing. Machiavelli would likely criticize Clinton as being less than genuine. What might he say of John Kerry?
John Kerry, the 2004 Democratic candidate is plagued with many issues. Is Kerry out to make a name for himself, or is he out to help the people of America?
Machiavelli (1515) contends that leaders should do what is best for the people and not just what is good for themselves. In respect to his infamous work, The Prince, Machiavellis
philosophy is revealed and to an extent, provides a theory of government. It incorporates suggestions on how states should be run as well as how leaders should act. In reading
this work, it appears that Machiavelli believes that Princes must meet the needs of the people. They cannot merely look to please themselves. This is common sense, but such political
writings were rather rare in his day whereas today, politicians are continually criticized. A selfish politician in the twenty-first century is quickly scolded and even those who appear selfless to
some are accused of acting in their own interests by his or her enemies. With the general public jaded and untrusting, how can one go about judging politicians? While difficult,
