The human body goes through regular physiological cycles which equip it for everyday and night activities. Temperature regulation is one of the bodys physiological functions which change throughout a period of time fluctuations in most of our sensory activities such as touch, smell, and the ability to hear. As the bodys temperature adjusts itself slightly throughout a cyclic period so do the sensitivities of our touch, smell, hearing and sight. These functions typically reach the peak of their sensitivities at certain times of the day, some researchers report this time is most typically around 3:00 a.m. and around 6:00 p.m. (McConnell, 1977). The phenomena of sleep is another one of the bodys cyclic functions. The cyclic nature of the bodys functions is important to individuals such as college students and others who wish to optimize their study and sleep habits for the purpose of memorizing material and performing at their best academically. Although the exact purpose of sleep is unknown, it is necessary for a healthy and productive existence for all living creatures. An organism which is deprived of sleep experiences numerous emotional and physical problems and can even die if deprived of sleep long enough (Greier, 1997). Sleep is diurnal in its cycles, that is we alternately experience sleep then wakefulness. When an individual is asleep he or she experiences a certain degree of unconsciousness. The intensity of the unconsciousness varies throughout the sleep period throughout the several stages of sleep. The first stage involves a slight drop in temperature, muscle relaxation, and slowed breathing (McConnell, 1977). Electroencephalographs indicate that an individual in this first stage of sleep lapses into a period of alpha rhythm brain activity ...
