This move has been of particular interest in the U.S. and the U.K. since these countries comprise the most powerful of the English speaking countries. While in the U.S. and the U.K. alike changes in spelling have been attempted to be implemented via a formal route, for the most part change has only occurred informally. We have generated formal proceedings and approvals throughout the years, even seen Presidential orders and House of Commons Bills but old spellings have stayed staunchly in place. The informal verses the formal aspects of the movement to simplify spelling, however, has been somewhat more successful. Slowly we are beginning to see the manner we communicate in a written format change and that change can be attributed more to popular preference than political maneuvering. The English language, like any language, is made up of words and words in turn are made up of specifically arranged letters. The "Movement of the Simplification of Spelling in the English Language" has arisen because of the less than predictable way that some words are spelled. There are far more sounds in the English language than the twenty-six letters which make up our alphabet. As a result certain combinations of letters have come to denote specific sounds. These same combinations, however, may denote an entirely different sound in any two words! To further confuse matters, specific sounds can be denoted by very different letter combinations.
