which was founded by Father Junipero Serra. It has a history that is rich and colorful. This mission is located in California. It is important because of the manner in which it helped to shape the history of California. This mission was one in a long chain of missions in California. As a mission, or church, its purpose was religious activity. The Franciscans believed that there should be religion in the California. Because of the time in which it was created, which was more than two hundred years ago, this mission served for much more than that. For example, one of the things the mission served as was a place for the warring California Battalion to reside. It also helped California to grow as a state. America as a nation was in its origins a product of the expansion into the New World in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At one time California was under Spanish rule. Long after the mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa was built, the Spanish and the Mexicans continued to have an influence on the culture and the civilization of California. This is important to the shaping of Californias heritage. One of Californias roads is referred to as "El Camino Real," which means the Royal Road (PG). It is also called the Kings Highway because of the Spanish heritage that belongs to California.
