Assessing the validity of the twenty-first century version of Ghandi's famous adage – the measure of society is the way it treats its children, its old people, and its criminals – one might readily surmise that while mankind moves forward into the future, there has been a significant backward step with regard to compassion and justice; as such, the blatant absence of social responsibility can be found by the manner in which children, criminals and the elderly are addressed.
