("Carnegie" 137). It is a twentieth century invention, which was first used in Italy in 1904 (137). It is generally brought to the surface via steam or hot water and
there are five primary sources of geothermal reservoir, one of which is dry, heated steam from steam fields that are present just below the surface of the Earth (137). A
mixed form comes from geysers and other sources (137). Another way in which this type of energy appears is through dry rocks and pressurized water fields (137). Finally, geothermal energy
can come from magna, which is the molten rock that exists in or near volcanoes (137). Geothermal energy has been seen as an energy source that may be a
good alternative to expensive oil and gas, for example. Yet, it is not used much for a variety of reasons. Today, this type of energy is primarily found in Iceland
where the buildings are actually heated with geothermal energy ("Carnegie" 137). However, only a few locations in the United States like Boise Idaho, use the energy as a substitute
for home heating oil (137). Still, it is important to keep in mind that electric power production as well as industrial processing and space heating are fed from geothermal sources
(137). The California Geysers project is the worlds largest geothermal electric generating complex that contains upwards of 2000 steam walls as well as the ability to provide about 1,300
megawatts of power (137). While many see this type of energy as a solution to the high cost of oil, and the limited availability, there are roadblocks to its mass
