It is a complex question to answer. Regardless, is Platos city just? First, it pays to note that justice is viewed as positive. It is always preferred that a city be just than unjust, at least according to Plato. Further, the author claims that justice is human virtue (Plato 11). The city and the individual is to some extent compared. The city is the model. The human being is separate and apart from the city but is also related to an extent. In the introduction above, it is suggested that parts of the human begin or human soul are compared to the parts of the city. In essence, Plato creates a paradigm through the model city and in some way it is used as metaphor. Yet, the question that is posed has to do not with the fact that the city may be compared with the soul in such a way as it obviously can, but whether an individual must live in a just city in order to be just. Many are familiar with the tales of Sodom and Gomorrah from the bible. They understand that many cities had evolved in such a way as to contain a great deal of disharmony and sin. There is corruption in many cities and many corrupt people as a result. It follows that just cities are preferred and that more people will be just because the city is so.
