the 1940s, it was not until the 1960s that an increased interest and heightened concern with human rights elevated the issue (Karmen, 2001). In the 1980s and early 1990s,
a focus on victimization and the cyclical nature of criminality led to an increased focus on victimology as a means of addressing crime, including domestic violence, rape and interpersonal violence.
The Problem Victims of criminal activity often demonstrate difficulties in psychological and daily life functioning. Research suggests that factors like family culture, social support and interactions
with the offender can play a role in recovery from victimization (Wallace, 1999). In fact, it can be argued that the best route to healthy coping and recovery extends
from a mechanism for effective social support, whether in the family setting or through the use of recovery groups (Wallace, 1999). Purpose of the Study The
purpose of this study is to consider the nature of victimization and the self-reported factors that promote healthy coping and psychological functioning following victimization. Further, this study will also
relate the specific impacts of social support, including family, friends and group support, on the return to functionality for victims of violent crimes. This study, then, will consider the
impacts of criminal victimization, including interpersonal violence, sexual abuse and domestic violence, all of which comprise a significant segment of the crimes that individuals report when assessing victimization in the
clinical setting (Wallace, 1999). This study will report the findings of interviews with individuals reporting victimization and consider their assessment of social support mechanisms and family functioning following victimization.
