today, they still are not able to become church leaders. Some Christians interpret doctrine to mean that women cannot make rules for men. There is simply a gender difference and that means that men and women are not viewed exactly the same. Religious leaders point to doctrine that suggests women are forbidden from being religious leaders and this is something that is intended by God. Surely that has had an influence on American culture which has been entrenched in religion since its founding. Of course, each religion in the United States today does have a different view on womens roles in the church. Fessenden explains that while there is a great deal of literature on the subject of women in the church, some fail to be specific in terms of which religion is being targeted (163). And while there are vast differences in the treatment of women in various religions from Sharia laws associated with Islam to a more liberal view where women can be ministers in the Methodist Church, they do have an effect on the general culture. Each religion, by treating women fundamentally different than men, creates a ripple effect in the larger culture. The meld of religions that generally do see women as inferior--or at least different--creates a world where women are viewed as not quite as capable as men. Nowhere is this more apparent than in sexuality. While the story of Mary was not intended as something symbolic by Bible authors, one may take it as such.
