helped to fill that void. The poem, comprised of 15 books, i.e., chapters, is actually a series of folktales and myths Ovid gathered and compiled. Ovid describes the condition of
the universe as chaos, just a confusion of atoms that are at war with each other. Depending on the translation one reads, some god or kindlier nature decided to impose
order amidst the chaos and thus, began to give shape to the universe so that it became as we know it now. God felt something or someone was needed to
maintain the order that was created and thus, Man was created. According to one translation, this section reads thusly: "Still a holier animal was lacking, one that was capable of
more rational thought, and that could rule over the other creatures. Humankind was born, perhaps made from divine seed by that artisan of the universe, as a source of a
better world, or from the newly-made earth, which, until recently connected to the fiery ether, still retained in it the seeds of the kindred heaven. It was this earth, mixed
with water, that Prometheus, child of Titan Iapetus, fashioned into the image of the gods who control everything. Although all other animals look downward at the earth, he gave to
humans a lofty posture and bid them to look at heaven and to raise their countenances upward to the stars. In this way, earth, which until now had been simple
and without form, changed and clothed itself with the unknown shape of humankind" (Summers, 2001). The Bible, by contrast, does not describe the universe as being in a state of
