as well. When people think of New York, or New York City to be more exact, they often envision one small region of the state when in fact it encompasses a wide range of property. Bearing that in mind the following paper offers a general look at the history of the New York (and city) Fire Department and then a brief look at some of the most famous fires in New York City. History of the New York Fire Department While people had inhabited the region known as New York prior to 1647 it was that year that served to offer some powerful elements of history concerning the fire department, and the beginning of a fire department. At that time " The aspect of city affairs was certainly not attractive. Fences were straggling, the public ways crooked, and many of the houses, which were chiefly built of wood and thatched with straw, encroached on the lines of the streets" (Young Chapter 1 Part I). Changes needed to occur in order to maintain the stability of the town and the safety of the people and many "stringent ordinances" were put into place along with individuals who would survey buildings (Young Chapter 1 Part I). They were put into place to further regulate any homes which would be newly erected in and around the city (Young Chapter 1 Part I). In relationship to fire concerns "Citizens were obliged to see to the sweeping of their chimneys, while the abolishment of wooden chimneys and thatched roofs were decreed" (Young Chapter 1 Part I).
