In Gerda Lerners work The Grimke Sisters from South Carolina the author traces the lives of these two sisters as they moved from being Southern belles to women who became modern feminists. The following paper traces their lives as seen in Lerners work. The Grimke Sisters As mentioned, the Grimke sisters were essentially Southern belles. They were born into wealth and social standing and should have lived a life of luxury, tended by slaves, and essentially lived a life where they were constantly taken care of in all respects. But, both of them clearly chose a different path. It seems that, according to Lerner, Sarah Grimke, the older of the sisters, had something of an epiphany as a child. She had a slave as a playmate and that girl died from an illness. "Sarah was disconsolate. Her attitude puzzled her parents. After all, it was not as if the servant girl were irreplaceable" (Lerner, 2008; 16). But Sarah essentially refused to find another playmate and was "often lonely" despite the number of brothers and sisters she had. She had experienced a reality wherein many of the people she knew were black, her favorite/best friend was black, and when this girl died it seems Sarah began to see things differently than would a typical Southern belle. She would later find hope and a voice among the Quaker community, a community that allowed women to speak and talk and take part in the way things ran. Sarah, and then later her sister Angelina found great vision and enlightenment under the guiding of the Quakers.
