Likely it was the mythical "Rosie the Riveter" who suffered the first organized sting against gender. After providing factory labor during World War II as virtually every able-bodied man was engaged in the war, at wars end all of the Rosies of the day were sent home to bake cookies so that the men could return to their old jobs. The Gendered Workplace Even though there have been great gains for women during the past century, "Traditional gender ideologies - man as breadwinner, woman as housewife - persist" (Kimmel, n.d.). Even though it is illegal and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission would go into full-bore mode should it hear of its occurrence, it is still quite likely that interviewers will ask women if they are married; if they have children; if they can deal with daycare issues; and if they plan to have additional children in the future. Any complaint about such questions results, of course, in a proclamation that the job has been filled. Kimmel (n.d.) states that today "or a colleague of the other sex who does the same job, for the same employer, in the same location, on the same shift." This is one way that employers can circumvent equal pay laws without providing grounds for substantiated complaints.
