the family. They love their dogs and cats sometimes more than their human relatives. To suggest that the animal is lesser than the human being then is unconscionable to some. That is, animals do not have the same rights as humans and many people object to that. For example, animal abuse now has tough penalties but it is nowhere as near as the legal penalties for murdering human beings. Additionally, people still eat many animals, so it seems disingenuous to punish people too harshly for being cruel to something that they may have for dinner at some point in time. In America for example, there is a distinction between pets and animals raised for food. Vegetarians and others who vie for animal rights, do not see the difference and they choose not to eat any animal. After all, they should have rights too. Of course, whether or not the animal is on the same plane as the human being spiritually is something that needs to be addressed in the context of philosophy. Obviously, animals are not as capable as human beings or they would not allow themselves to be locked up in cages and treated harshly by the human. Yet, in some way they are like human beings who are mentally handicapped. Animals have souls and are loving and lovable, but they do not have the wherewithal to make conscious decisions, or at least, that capability it is not obvious to the human being. In order to study the problem, Descartes and Freuds assessments will be discussed. Each has their own view of life and within the scope of this, one may decide how it is that animals should be treated.
