Diets and the economy seem to be aspects of society that would have nothing to do with one another. But, in all honesty, the diet industry is one of the most influential aspects of our economy. It brings in billions of dollars a year and sells, again and again, to the public who desires to lose weight. In many ways we can perhaps state that the economic success of the diet industry is due to our economic condition, wherein we are one of the wealthiest nations in the world and thus have the time and energy to spend money on shedding the pounds of the "good life." But, we can also assume that when the economy is bad, and people are worried about making enough money to cover rent or mortgage and other payments, the diet industry is likely to suffer, if only slightly. In the following paper we examine the diet industry and the affect the economy may well have upon that money making business. Diet and Economy In better understanding what the diet industry entails we must first define the industry. "The term diet...refers exclusively to weight reduction diets...Weight reduction diets include medically supervised diets; self-administered diets; commercial diet organizations and centers; weight-loss support groups or behavior modification programs; "fad" diets; "sensible, well-balanced" diets; in-hospital fasts; very-low-calorie diets (VLCDs); prepackaged food plans; and diets supplemented by drugs or artificial food products or supplements" (Anonymous NAAFA Policy on Dieting and the Diet Industry dieting.html).
