differ between men and women. During the 1990s, John Gray published a book called Men are From Mars, Women are from Venus, to highlight the differences in communication style. As
he made the talk show rounds he suggested that men and women speak so differently, it is almost like they are from different planets. When conversation takes place between
men and women, there is often a divide. When people are dating, there may be easy conversation at first, but then gender patterns will take over. Stereotypically, women like to
talk things through, while men do not like to broach serious topics head on. Some say that men and women are very different in terms of communication style, but skill
enters the picture too. Women are generally the ones who plan social events, make the calls, and arrange things and so forth. Men are provided with duties to help out.
Similarly, the woman in a typical patriarchal family will do much of the housework, and the man is delegated garbage duty, or does chores that are an adjunct to what
the woman has already accomplished. Yet, despite the difference in terms of roles, and who is in charge of the family home, there are differences when conversation takes place. In
fact, in marriages, communication styles differ, but gender is very important in determining that type of communication that will emerge. Deborah Tannen (2001) writes: "Men and womens differing assumptions about
the meaning of talk impinge on just about every issue" (p. 158). Talk does have hidden messages and words take on different meanings. There are also seemingly male and
female topics as it respects conversation. It is often the case that men are more interested in sports and politics, whereas women will talk about their relationships. Of course, gender
