considerably more complex. The Civil War did not, after all, spontaneously occur in a vacuum. The circumstances leading up to it had been building for forty years and all the time the relationship between the northern states and the southern ones slowly deteriorated. The ultimate result would be one of the bloodiest wars in history. The Civil War was also one of the most pivotal and defining events in U.S. history. Not only were American racial relations and politics affected by the war and the ten year reconstruction period that would follow, so too was American culture, economics, civil rights, and even the U.S. Constitution itself. There was considerable resentment in the years preceding the actual eruption of the war by those who resented the Union for the control it tried to place on issues which they considered to be issues of the state and not ones which should be controlled by the federal government. This was complicated by the fact that the decades preceding the Civil War were filled with many changes. The United States was in a period of constant change and expansion (Foner and Garraty, 1991). Our frontiers were rapidly moving from east to west and the number of states was growing with that expansion (Foner and Garraty, 1991). Among the more precipitory events that occurred during this time period was the war with Mexico of 1846-1848 and the Secession Crisis of November 1860-April 1861. Each of these larger factors encompassed many subcomponents such as the annexation of Texas, the Wilmot proviso, expansionism, the repeal of the Missouri Compromise and the Presidential election of 1860 which were critical elements in determining the direction that this country would ultimately take.
