made with equal veracity about Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Winston Churchill. Each of these politicians looked on public speaking as political communication, and, as such, that the communication should
be clear, substantive, inspirational and often humorous (Faucheux 7). Unfortunately, many of our current day politicians have confused the "persuasiveness of salesmanship" with the "eloquence of statesmanship" (Faucheux 7).
This leaves the public with speeches that dont communicate the true thoughts of those running for office. These speeches have about as much
relevance as a commercial for coffee creamer. The current emphasis on a scientifically tested "message" as the focal point to the modern campaign strategy has created a number of candidates
that simply lift their speeches from the most current poll report (Faucheux 7). Although his words would come back to haunt him, Faucheux regards Georges Bushs speech on winning
the 1988 GOP nomination as an excellent example of a good speech. In this speech, Bush drew a clear contrast between himself and his opponent, Michael Dukakis, it solidified the
GOP base, and appealed to swing voters (Faucheux 7). Additionally, it projected just the right tone needed to strengthen Bushs personal image as a leader (Faucheux 7). Of course, public
speaking occurs in other formats. For example, an all too familiar scene is frequently played out in the nations board rooms. An executive walks in, turns on an overhead projector
