For example, the Incas generally demanded tributes of goods and services from the people while the Aztecs, and their essential religion and culture, often relied very heavily on human sacrifice as well as other forms of tributes. The following paper discusses the different types of tributes seen in the Inca and Aztec cultures in the 16th century. Incas and Aztecs Based on the testimony of Martin Cari, a document faxed by the student requesting this paper, the Incas demanding a widely varied form of tribute from their citizens. It seems to be a very complex and well designed system of tribute that, as mentioned, primarily consisted of goods as well as services. In this particular testimony we note that when asked, Martin Cari indicated that he required, from the town of Chuquito, "his subject cultivate in some years, 100 topos....of land and in other years 70 topos of potatoes, quinua" etc. (283). While the exact size of a topos is not known, just one topos would require "16 Indian males and 8 Indian females" in order to complete plowing in one day. This clearly indicates that a great number of people were required to work land that was used to grow tribute to the leaders. In another section of the document we note that people were provided to help transport goods, and that the leaders would supply wool, probably obtained by other contributors, to weavers who would be required to weave a certain amount of cloth every year. The author further indicates that "Asked what service and tribute they [the commoners] give to the cacique principal of Chuquito, his subjects answered that they provide 30 Indians for guarding land and another 20 for guarding animals and in some years 2 pieces of cumbi ...
