first thing anyone asks is where the name of the team came from. Alabama has been playing football since 1892, so some details have been lost. However, several sources agree that the name comes from a game played back in 1907. The earliest newspaper reports about Alabama list the team either as the "varsity" or the "Crimson White after the school colors" (Re: Names and phrases for colleges, 2004). The first team nickname that was used by the papers was "Thin Red Line," which appears to have been popular until 1906 (Re: names and phrases for colleges, 2004). In 1907, in a game against rival Auburn, its alleged that Hugh Roberts, "former sports editor of the Birmingham Age-Herald" first used the term "Crimson Tide" (Re: Names and phrases for college, 2004). This was the last game between the two schools until 1948, and was played in a "sea of mud," with Auburn heavily favored to win (Re: Names and phrases for colleges, 2004). However, the "Thin Red Line played a great game in the red mud and held Auburn to a 6-6 tie, thus gaining the name Crimson Tide" (Re: Names and phrases for colleges, 2004). It must have been the red mud. At any rate, the name stuck; it appears that "Zipp Newman, former sports editor of the Birmingham News" did more to popularize the name than "any other writer" (Re: Names and phrases for colleges, 2004). The team is consistently ranked among the best in the nation. The reason for its success is due to many factors, but one of the most important is their coach.
