In the end, the answer seems to be yes, but one would have to delve more deeply into the concept, as well as the political landscape, in order to determine that. First, what are boomburbs? Lang (2004) explains that they are defined as "an incorporated place with more than 100,000 residents that is not the largest city in the metropolitan area and that has maintained double-digit population growth rates in recent decades" (p.1). They are areas where population growth is out of control. Sometimes this occurs because people find good places to live, and others follow. During the middle to latter part of the twentieth century, in Brooklyn, New York, there was a phenomenon called black flight/white flight. As African Americans moved up, and into white neighborhoods, white people moved out. Today, the racial dynamic is a bit different, but the fact is that people are on the move. When there is a region that is desirable, population can grow exponentially. The student points out that while New York is growing, its residents have a stake in the region, but this is not necessarily true for boomburbs. Indeed, it seems as if boomburbs grow very fast, the people are not as interested in planting roots. They themselves may be transients or perhaps will take the profit when their real estate prices increase. One can see that a different mentality exists in boomburbs than in the ordinary city or suburb. Yet, cities are known for having minority groups present whereas suburbs do not. Boomburbs embrace minority groups and this may be because there is a different mentality in these fast growing entities. ...
