For instance, some terrorists use religion as a means to justify their actions, and Islam in particular has become distorted and abused when used by such violent groups. Similarly, terrorist groups have used the media to increase exposure and inculcate a culture of fear in their demographic targets. Even the democratic process of elections has often been subverted by terrorists to advance their agendas. This paper will examine the abuse of these three institutions (religion, media, and the democratic process) by terrorist groups around the world. This paragraph assists the student in showing how religious has been subverted and exploited by terrorist groups across the world. Religion has always played a key role in the justification of grotesque acts of violence and war for several centuries. There are always factions of zealots eager to rewrite their faith in order to achieve their own agendas. Present day examples involve terrorist groups like Al Qaeda but are not necessarily limited to the Middle East. These groups attempt to affect change by use of fear, intimidation, and terror with the organizational trappings of a religious revolution. This misinterpretation of religious doctrine has directly negatively affected the Muslim community in terms of how Islam is viewed worldwide, to give but one example. Thanks to these terrorist groups, Islam is seen as a religion of hate and intolerance, one that promotes violence against the West and all those aligned with it.
