By turns heart wrenching and hilarious (I found myself laughing out loud), it offers memorable portraits of the denizens who inhabit this crumbling ruin, and yet manage to retain their sense of humor and humanity through a series of bizarre events. Mistrys characters dont face tremendous dangers or have magnificent adventures, they simply live in the Firozsha Baag and struggle to survive each day, and thats enough. The question that comes to mind in discussing Mistry is why, as an immigrant to Canada, a country hes now lived in since 1975, he still sets his stories in India. Critics have in fact suggested that he should turn his attention to the immigrant experience, but I would like to consider that by writing about India he is in fact dealing with the main defining characteristic of immigrants everywhere: their status as outsiders. Rohinton Mistry Rohinton Mistry was born in India in 1952, grew up in Bombay (now Mumbai), and received a degree in mathematics and economics from the University of Bombay (Ross, 1999). He emigrated from India to Canada in 1975 and got a second bachelors degree in English and philosophy from the University of Toronto; he worked in a bank to support himself during this period (Ross, 1999). He began writing soon after his arrival in Canada, and won the "Canadian Fiction Magazines annual Contributors Prize in 1985" (Ross, 1999, 239). Tales from Firozsha Baag appeared in Canada two years later, and was published in 1989 in the United States, under the title Swimming Lessons and Other Stories from Firozsha Baag (Ross, 1999).
