This has been the darker side of Enduring Freedoms shiny coinage. However, there have been enough bright spots in the ensuing campaign. Though they are not career officers, thousands of Reserve officers left home, profitable careers, and loved ones to defend their country in its time of need. Though most of the media have focused on the career armed forces, it has to be stated that without the willingness of the Reserves to bolster the militarys numbers, this campaign may have been over before it truly began. Certain reports state that nearly two hundred thousand Reserve officers are actively serving (Madigan 2003). This is the maximum number of Reservists that the Constitution will allow the President to mobilize. They are to only be utilized for a maximum of two hundred and seventy days before rotated home(Pike 2002). Of these forces which were deployed, the Global Security Organization states that many of these Reservists served as "public affairs officers, military intelligence, civil affairs, medical and other combat support and combat service support specialties"(Pike, 2002). Additionally, there are more than seven hundred mobilized IMA soldiers supporting the ongoing operations(Pike 2002). Many Reservists did not deploy overseas but rather were utilized at home, to protect the home front. In essence they replaced many active duty troops filling the role of security, air traffic controllers, mortuary crews and firemen(Kitfield, 2001). Without these qualified personnel the armed forces would have been forced to retain many key active duty members stateside when their presence could have been better utilized in an overseas area.
