The limited efficacy of pharmacotherapy alone has motivated the study of adjunctive psychosocial interventions. Randomized controlled trials support the efficacy of adjunctive cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), family-focused treatment (FFT) or similar forms of family psychoeducation, interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT), and group psychoeducation in preventing depressive and manic recurrences, stabilizing symptoms, or enhancing functioning in 1- to 2-year periods (Miklowitz et al, 2007, pp. 419-427). While bipolar disorder causes people to view the world in a warped perspective, this is not to say they are incapable of functioning without the dark cloud of suicide ever looming overhead. In fact, many people who suffer from bipolar disorder are fully able to maintain their lives as normal, with some gaining significant benefit from the combined benefits of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial therapy. Inherently associated with suicidal tendencies, bipolar disorder lifts sufferers into a physical and mental mania and then drops them down to what many describe as the depths of despair, occurrences that can be mere minutes apart when they happen. The success of such medications as Lithium for addressing suicidal tendencies is derived from its serotonergic and/or mood-stabilizing effects (NOAH, 2004); coupled with coinciding psychological approaches as cognitive behavioral therapy, the stigma of being suicidal quickly holds no value as an allegedly "normal" aspect of bipolar ...
