several decades. It is an area of scientific involvement that has led societies to a point where food can be produced more adequately and in greater quantify, and where cells can be perhaps reproduced in ways only previously imagined. For these reasons, and many more, the single cell protein is considered the most powerful instant 30 year success. The following paper examines this belief and the reasoning behind it. Single Cell Protein Success To begin with one author notes that, "Production of single cell protein - a mass of microorganisms along with their nutrient contents - both for animal feeds and human food - has at least a 30-year history. Initially, work was done on hydrocarbons as source material" (Anantharaman, 1998). However, this focus quickly came to a point where it was not cost effective because of the increase of prices of petroleum products. "Bacteria and yeast have been used to ferment petroleum products, methanol, methane gas, lignocellulose, spent sulphite liquor by-products of paper mills, molasses, whey and other industrial fermentation by-products. Increased efficiency is needed before these processes become economically viable" (Anantharaman, 1998). Another author indicates similar problems in stating that, ". However, the production of single cell proteins, amino acids and secondary metabolites is more complicated; the initial capital investments are quite high and, once established, high-quality technical expertise and support facilities are required to maintain production" (Sahai , 2003). In terms of what exactly single cell protein knowledge does we note that, as mentioned, livestock feed and food production is increased. This is because one single protein cell can be used to reproduce a plant: "Plant tissue culture is a technique that has been known for 30 years. For many plant species it is technically possible to regenerate a whole plant from a single ...
