make a living. Decades ago people were offered no guarantees at work of any kind. Their job was not guaranteed and their working conditions were not guaranteed. In essence, they
had to struggle to work for next to nothing and often in conditions that were less than safe, jeopardizing their lives every day. Such was clearly the case for hazardous
jobs such as could be found in steel mills. In "Striking Steel" by Jack Metzgar the author sets out to examine the world of his father, a man who struggled
for a union at his place of work. The following paper examines this book at it involves the lives of the men who worked in such mills before and then
after the union. Striking Steel As mentioned, working under conditions where there was no union to protect was a very dangerous position to be in. The men in the
book by Metzgar are men who risk their lives every day with conditions involving incredibly dangerous equipment and very high temperatures. They were not allowed to complain because someone else
was eagerly waiting to take their place in order to acquire a paying job. The corporations, companies, and owners of such mills knew full well that they were getting cheap
labor and that the men had no power to complain or fight for better wages and conditions. They were lucky to be able to make any money and thus feed
their families. One can only imagine how difficult it was to work for more hours than is reasonable in a place that was very dangerous for less than adequate wages.
