through the eyes of E.D. Applegate and a thirteen-year-old delinquent who is taken in by the family--Jake Semple--the reader learns that you cannot judge what someone is like by appearances and also that people will generally respond to the way in which they are treated. While the Applegates are artistic, eccentric and generally strange, they do not make presumptions about Jake and, consequently, offer him the opportunity to find out who he truly is rather than accept the role that has been cast for him. With humor and acceptance, Jake and E.D. both learn to appreciate their own individuality and talents within the boundaries of a family that values difference. Jake is a boy that everyone in his experience has already identified as an ideal candidate for the juvenile detention center. E.D., who provides the narrative voice for the first chapter states that "Jake Semple was famous. He had been kicked out of all the public schools in the whole state of Rhode Island" (Tolan 2). Jake is sent to North Carolina to live with his grandfather, Henry Dugan, and sets a record by becoming the first person in living memory to be expelled from the Traybridge Middle School in just a few weeks (Tolan 2). However, at this point, E.D.s Aunt Lucille intervenes and persuades Jakes social worker that he can be successfully home schooled with the rest of the Applegate children in what E.D.s father terms the "Creative Academy" (Tolan 2). From little four-year-old Destiny Applegate to the patriarch of the family, Grandfather Zedediah, the Applegates are all creative, talented, and extremely artistic people, with the sole exception of E.D., which makes the young heroine of the story feel like she is "invisible."
