Essay / Research Paper Abstract

A 6 page paper finding the design shortcomings of a test of tire longevity and discussing appropriate statistical measures that should be used. Winston Tire Company claims its new tires last for 40,000 miles. This is presented not as a guarantee of minimum mileage purchasers can expect, but rather as an average. An independent agency road-tested 100 tires in an effort to evaluate the company’s claims, creating a sample of n = 100. An independent testing agency has tested Wilson tires and found them lacking, but the truth is that the study is so poorly designed that the agency cannot make any definitive determination about the quality of Wilson tires. The purpose here is to identify appropriate statistical tests of data. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The purpose here is to identify appropriate statistical tests of data. Design Considerations Method is always important in arriving at true, non-biased results, but it is of even greater consequence in this problem than in some others. There are many types of drivers and driving situations, and specific kinds of cars are better suited to some sets of conditions than others. For the study to be effective, the testing agency needs to classify test groups according to how the tires will be tested. These are road tests, and as such, occur over time in actual service. Tires that log 20,000 over two years are likely to last longer than tires that gain 20,000 in six months of heavy, sustained highway driving. Any study that does not seek to separate these and other classes of driving patterns cannot be completely valid in its results. Part of the problem of such a study is that the company makes no specific claim that is easily testable. It claims that its tires last an average of 40,000, a claim that is virtually meaningless in giving the purchaser some ...
