"stage theory is a rigorous concept of human development that includes at least four defining criteria." Those criteria include: invariant sequences of development, which means all humans must pass through these stages of development; different kinds of growth occurs at different periods in ones life; most people will experience the same type of growth at each stage; "the stages are hierarchical integrations of abilities and skills" (Newkirk, 2007); and regardless of culture, stages are just about the same for everyone, i.e., they are universal (Newkirk, 2007). In this essay, we discuss Eriksons stages of psychosocial growth as compared to Piagets stages of cognitive development or Freuds phases of psychosexual development. It is true that we will see in Eriksons work some resemblance of Freuds thoughts. For instance, Ericksons concentration on ego development. However, Eriksons theory focuses more on culture and society. We will also discuss Kohlberg, whose stages of moral development are well-known. Kohlbergs stages of moral development may be the most researched and accepted because it is more comprehensive than any of the other approaches, such as Piagets theory of moral development. Eriksons Stages of Psychosocial Development Erikson proposed Eight Stages of Human Development. Erikson described his theory in terms of crises, in other words, there is a crisis at each stage the individual must resolve in order to grow and develop. 1. Stage 1: Infancy, birth to age 1 year. Crisis: Trust vs. Mistrust. infants are totally dependent on others to meet all their most basic survival needs, thus, they have no choice but to trust others.
