giving a brief introduction to the topic before investigating in it greater detail. Proxim (2003) summarises spread spectrum as a coding technique for digital transmission which is a concise explanation
of the technology: however, spread spectrum is important not only because of the form of the technology itself but also because of the implications which it has for the present
methodologies of long distance communication, both in terms of commercial and other uses.
As Proxim notes, it was first developed for military applications - the student could point out here that this could also be said of other forms
of communication technology which are now in common use, such as the Internet. For some time, it was only the military applications which were in operation, and there was little
or no attempt to develop spread spectrum for civilian uses, although this has changed considerably in the recent past. The idea behind spread spectrum is to disguise signal by making
it appear to be noise. The spectrum produced by noise is flat, without distinctive peaks, and is diminished or removed altogether by means of filters. Spread spectrum uses a particular
form of coding to modify the spectrum and spread it out - this signal has greater bandwidth and lower power density. Because of the latter, there is less interference, and
when the signal is decoded by the recipient, the decoding process allows further resistance to interference.
