Creon. Respective to these central characters, each one comes to various conclusions with regard to the acceptance of reality, issues of heroism and morality and, perhaps above all, the
concept of their own mortality. Inasmuch as both characters derive their conclusions on account of individual occurrences, one can argue that the path to enlightenment may have been different,
but the ultimate outcome reaped the same benefit. With Oedipus as the protagonist and Creon as the antagonist, only Oedipus ends up the
tragic figure due directly to his inability to alter the course of his life. Defining this particular concept calls for ones close interpretation of what the roles of protagonist
and antagonist truly represent; with that, it becomes quite simple to understand how the lead characters can so easily slip into the tragic state they eventually inhabit. Through their
difficult and sometimes life-changing experiences, both Oedipus and Creon come to recognize what it is their own self-knowledge has gained through their individual struggles. When assessing the integral components
that comprise each character, it is important to determine just how much of their actions are motivated by fate or free will; summation of all applicable elements will likely lead
