There are many groups, these may be social groups, families or more formal groups, such as work teams, however in all there is the need for communication. To be classified as a group the individuals must have a common purpose, this is the glue that holds a group together, and it is this common purpose of goal that will also be reflected in the communication. The group itself will determine the way that communication takes place and the norms. It is within groups that many of the most important decision will be made, form the way the economy is run to the decision regarding the local school and more personal issues, such as ethical or moral dilemmas. The reasons for joining a group are multifaceted. One of the most basic can be seen as the power of the group, with more minds potentially offering more solutions or option, as seen with the saying that two heads are better than one. Group synergy has many practical benefits, these are well known in the workplace, where the ability to use a team may save money, and in the example of a new product decrease the lead time to introduction. There is much empirical evidence that cross functional teams will increase the speed of development and increase the success rate (McDonough, 1999).
