Direct and international e-commerce is growing, and the Internet provides a wealth of information applicable to more standard methods of achieving 'international' status. It should be considered an integral part of establishing and maintaining relationships with foreign distributors and retailers. The paper discusses some of the specific sites offering export information to small business, such as that of Assist International. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Multinational companies long have been involved in entering new countries to which commercial access has been restricted or even wholly denied for generations and making possible the entry of small business on a significant scale. The arrival of these large businesses have been beneficial for the economies of various nations, but in many cases local companies have suffered. "Accustomed to dominant positions in protected markets, they suddenly face foreign rivals wielding a daunting array of advantages: substantial financial resources, advanced technology, superior products, powerful brands, and seasoned marketing and management skills" (Dawar, 1999; p. 119). While many small businesses lack "seasoned marketing" ability, alliance with local businesses can be beneficial to both sides. US small business gains the advantage of exporting its goods and services to other nations; foreign distributors and retailers suffer less from the effects of new entrants into their markets and can provide valuable distribution services to US small business exporters. The Internet is an invaluable tool for both finding these businesses potentially interested in such alliance and in communicating with them to build and maintain necessary relationships. The US Commerce Department says that "Small businesses are the fastest growing part of our economy and are the engine of our future job growth, employing 54 percent of the private workforce and accounting for half of our gross domestic product" (Anonymous, 1996; p. 16).
