A 12 page literature review examining the value of accountants to the small business. The literature review is for use in a study of small businesses in which they will be surveyed regarding the sources of the accounting expertise they use, for the purpose of relating accounting presence and business failure. The original purpose of this literature review was to locate and discuss articles focusing on small businesses’ use and employment of accounting personnel in support of an upcoming study of that relationship and its effect on the course of development of the small enterprise. No such specific information appears to be available, however, a surprising discovery in light of the critical nature of efficient and optimal operation of business of any size. Despite the dearth of information directly related to the proposed hypotheses for the study, the information that does exist points to the need for the proposed study. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

The Victorian Fireplace Shop in Richmond, Virginia had been in business for nearly 25 years, and found itself involved in intense activity leading to the greatest
sales levels that the company had ever experienced. Owner Karen Duke realized that the business should be making more financial progress. She said, "We had sold more than
ever, but there was no money in the bank ... It was very frustrating to be doing the same thing for so many years and not learn the secret to
how to make it work" (Victorian Fireplace Shop, n.d.). The company had had more employees in the past, but at the time the entire regular workforce consisted of Karen,
her husband Mike and one other employee. Karen consulted with volunteers with the Service Corps of Retired Executives (SCORE), a service of the
Small Business Administration (SBA) of the United States government. One of the SCORE counselors, accountant Steve Shapiro, "saw that the company would benefit from more rigorous bookkeeping" (Victorian Fireplace
Shop, n.d.). The other counselor helped Karen "break the business down, analyze individual aspects and understand how they fit together to improve the overall business" (Victorian Fireplace Shop, n.d.).
