manufacture of every type of clothing known to humanity. Rarely, is globalization discussed in the context of arms dealing or the proliferation of small arms throughout Southeast Asia. Ironically, the
processes of globalization that have served as undermining factors in international cooperation and interdependence have also served to allow nations entirely new channels and forms of access to products that
had not necessarily readily available. For example, nations and special interest groups within nations that would not have had easy access to the weaponry that could support their ideological objectives
are now in the position of being desirable customers for international arms dealers. It serves as something of a classic example of wise economic planning and going where the market
is. Small arms dealers have found a lucrative market for their product and take advantage of the opportunities it presents whenever and wherever possible.
The problem, of course, is that such connections ultimately add to the ever-widening gulf that exists between nations, along with how insurgent groups, terrorists, legitimate "freedom fighters," and
any other group with the proverbial "bone to pick" gain access to the tools they need to perpetuate their battles. As a result, the political and economic structures develop in
ways that serve to accommodate the needs of so-called "business" concerns that assure that this sort of "business" both proliferates and profits. Both
government and non-governmental organizations in Southeast Asia that act in ways to combat the proliferation of small arms find themselves faced with enormous challenges, not the least of which is
