For any student entering university today there is likely to be a level of existing computer skills, gained through school or at home. Any student that has this experience can examined to consider how these and other existing skills will help in a university setting. These skills and experiences will have both direct and indirect effects. The existing knowledge gained through education teach the basics of computing, how popular programmes are used and some basic elements of internet and IT use. These are direct relevance for any student. However, at a more basic level the use of a computer is of greater benefit due to the psychological impact it has and the way in which IT becomes a normal part of life. The influence of having access to a computer and the impact of not having access to a computer has brought about what is known as the digital divide.
