to understand how children develop in single parent households. In "Single Mothers Self-Efficacy, Parenting in the Home Environment, and Childrens Development in a Two-Wave Study" by Aurora P. Jackson and Richard Scheines the research is aimed at a fairly specific group of single mothers; African American mothers from impoverished/welfare households. The following paper analyzes the research article. Problem Formation and Research Design The purpose of this study was to understand how employment affects a single mother, and the child or children of the single mother. It is noted that the research indicates that studies show women who work tend to essentially create a more positive environment for the children and that the mother is less likely to be depressed and thus is also a better parent in many respects. One of the things noted by the study, or involved in the research, was that aspect of single parenting that involves the father of the children. From the perspective of this particular reader this seems to complicate the study further. That is not to say that a study which researched the affects of a father, as he is absent but yet involved with the children, is not a valid research topic. But, it appears as though the researchers have added this element unnecessarily if they are simply looking at employment and the efficacy of the mothers. It would perhaps have been better to have done a separate research on that topic of fathers alone. For this reader it feels as though they have simply added this twist as perhaps an afterthought for the statement of the research indicates they are studying "the associations among low wage maternal employment, financial strain, psychological well-being, parenting, and childrens development over a three-year period" ...
